What is a Navigation Challenge?

They are a series of navigation “mind benders” designed to test and refresh your navigation skills. Each Navigation Challenge is broken into three sections or scenarios. Each section will cover one of three broad sets of skills: (1) Map Interpretation, (2) Compass Work and (3) Electronic Guided Navigation Systems (i.e.: GPS, altimeters, and computerized mapping). Although some Challenges require you to visit an actual location most are designed to be completed by anyone anywhere in the world.

How do I participate in a challenge?

Simply click on the Navigation Challenge Icon (http://hanniknavigation.com/images/NewImage.jpg) and print out the Challenge and any associated maps (usually two pages total). On the Challenge you will find two to three sections each with a heading relating to the skill set required to complete that section. Each heading is a separate question unless otherwise noted and therefore does not require that you complete the heading prior.

Do I need any equipment to complete the Challenge?

It depends on the specific Challenge and it’s heading but most can be accomplished with a simple base plate compass. On the Nav Tools page there are a number of resources to help you complete the challenge. Tools such as a UTM reader, Lat/Long Ruler, and links to many helpful websites can be found there. GPS and challenges will obviously require a GPS.

How often are Navigation Challenges published?

Navigation Challenges are published monthly.

How do I know if I am correct?

Currently you need to email us at NavChallenge@HannikNavigation.com requesting a PDF version of the answers. The answers are provided free. Please be sure to include your return email address and the specific Navigation Challenge’ Month and Year. We are working on getting them accessible on the web.

What if I need more help after viewing the free answers?

You can request a full explanation of how to arrive at the answer to any challenge on our Order page.  Cost runs from $2.00 to $5.00 depending on the complexity of the question and its answer. If you still need more help we encourage you to attend one of our classes or to schedule some private instruction.

Do I win anything from providing the correct answer?
